Anna Fenton, Bus Operations, First Capital Connect (Rail Placement)

So, what has happened this month… I’ve moved to the other side and started all over again. The first thing I needed to learn was all the acronyms that exist on the rail side- I’m sure rail people speak a totally different language that is not English! Not a day goes by that I don’t ask what an acronym means and sometimes the person using it can’t even tell me.

Joe Mear, Bus Operations, North Region Depot Transformation Team

One highlight last month was a day at the annual Young Bus Managers Conference in Brighton, which focussed on the use of new technologies in the industry. The event also included a speech by the MD of Arriva UK Bus and served as a good opportunity to meet other young managers from First and other operators. It was well worth a visit. There was even time for an ice cream and crazy-golf in the mid-March sun before an evening on the train back to Yorkshire!

Rob Hughes- Bus Operations (South West)

I spent the most part of the month in Bristol at Enterprise House (which is just the posh name for the slightly less grandiose Lawrence Hill depot). This, along with Southampton, is the location for Devon and Cornwall’s regionalised positions and was my make-shift home while I undertook my training as a Management Accountant (or did a two week finance placement – however you want to look at it). As well as surfing the various functions of the finance department, I was tasked with undertaking a fixed asset audit of the whole of Cymru. As interesting as that was, it certainly makes me confident that I will never forget the importance of internal audit controls.

Lynsey McCabe – Rail Engineering (First ScotRail)

It’s been a busy busy 5 months since returning to Shields Depot after my summer at Bombardier doing my “Vehicle Build” placement. Since then, I’ve been involved in various projects, including the preparation for the elusive Winter that we didn’t see this year (YAY!), which was a relief as I didn’t fancy another year with icicles hanging off my nose and looking like I’d been tangoed.

David Pinder - Rail Operations (ScotRail)

The past month has mainly been spent on my safety placement where I was involved in the investigation of a serious Operational incident at one of our depots. This further highlighted the importance of good communication at work, what can happen when communication breaks down, and also the importance of taking all facts into consideration when carrying out any type of investigation.

Jamie Adamson - Rail Engineering (ScotRail)

Early in December I joined the other First ’11 graduates in Leeds, for an introduction to management skills course, plus a day of skimming the murky waters of employment law. The management skills course talked about such issues as conflict resolution, effective leadership, planning and co-ordinating – this was very interesting, and gave a good insight into the sort of skills we would have to exhibit in our future careers as managers of people, budgets and assets. The employment law discussion was a complex affair – you do not have to sign a contract to be bound by it, for instance. The notes from this will be carefully preserved, as they will come in useful some day.

Anna Fenton – Bus Operations (Leicester)

I am currently sat in the marketing and commercial office which is where I have spent the last few weeks with the odd venture outside. I have been spending time thinking of new brands, sorting out the Leicester travel shop- it was a mess with paper work- and getting my head into some passenger and revenue numbers.
